Performance-Based Layoffs at Qualcomm
Earlier this week, Qualcomm announced internally that it would be conducting performance-focused reductions within the company.
Rumors include AI token usage will be a factor in the performance reviews and that, if the layoffs are truly performance based, at least 20% of the workforce will be laid off.
The layoff email was sent to employees in all locations, including India.
Meta’s Fire to Hire Method
Meta laid off 8,000 employees in May 2026 to help offset massive infrastructure and capital investments in artificial intelligence.
However, the company appears to be hiring yet again, leaving employees confused and angry.
The “fire to hire” method implies that once employees are fired, the positions they once held are reopened with lower salary ranges and higher expectations. This could mean one job is created from the responsibilities of two or three past employees.
Amazon’s Cash Flow is Going Straight to AI
Amazon employees are feeling cheated as a new Business Insider article shows a sharp decrease in company cash flow over the past two years. The reason for the decline is investment in AI.
While most companies have stated their reasons for layoffs being AI investment, it does beg the question of why so much needs to be invested, so much so that the company goes into debt.
Large tech companies are seeing AI chips as better investments than raises for employees.
How will this affect the economy over time?
