“I used to cry after meetings”: Amazon India trails both Big Tech rivals and its own U.S. offices
"Not good for my mental well being. I used to cry after meetings." It’s one of thousands of anonymous reviews posted by Amazon India employees on Blind, the anonymous community app for professionals. Another describes a culture where "People work day and night and this is an expectation rather than a choice." The numbers suggest these are not isolated complaints.
Blind data from 500,000+ employees, including 51,000+ in India, across Amazon, Google, and Microsoft shows Amazon India ranking last on most major workplace metrics. Its overall satisfaction score is 3.10, compared with 3.78 at Microsoft India and 4.06 at Google India.
Work-life balance: between “Poor” and “Very Poor”
Google India scores 4.21 on work-life balance. Microsoft India scores 3.98. Amazon India scores just 2.38.
36% of Amazon India employees cite work-life balance as a con in their reviews, compared with 22% in North America. The scores reflect the same gap. India fares significantly worse than North America (2.72), a gap of 0.34 points. That gap is nearly twice the India-to-North America WLB difference seen at Google (0.21) and Microsoft (0.19).
The cause is structural: Indian employees at Big Tech are expected to work across time zones, report to U.S.-based leadership, and compete for promotions in systems largely designed elsewhere. India teams supporting US-launched services absorb a 10–13 hour time difference as a condition of the job. Oncalls often land in the middle of the night. Overwork is a shared experience in India, but it is more acute at Amazon.
Culture: Amazon’s frugality culture plays out differently by geography

Amazon's stated frugality principle often means no catered lunches, no fancy offsites in North America. In India, employees describe a version of that culture paired with extreme hours.
At Google India, employees frequently cite free food, commute cabs, and campus amenities as reasons to stay. At Microsoft India, benefits are modest but present. At Amazon India, the extreme hours come with no visible benefits. The perception is reflected in Amazon India's culture score of 2.66, compared with 3.87 at Microsoft India and 4.12 at Google India.
Management: The lowest yet again
"Leadership has lost its charm and are now bootlickers mostly. Layoffs during PIP due to very bad managers who preferred to retain people who talked well."
Employees frequently describe managers as prioritizing self-preservation over team advocacy. Many also say Amazon's Focus plan (the company's formal performance management tool) is applied more arbitrarily and more aggressively in India than in North America.
The ratings reflect that frustration: Amazon India scores 2.58 on management, versus 3.30 at Microsoft India and 3.38 at Google India.
Compensation and career growth: The only edge, and it’s narrowing

Amazon India scores 3.42 on compensation and 3.39 on career growth, the only two dimensions where it is not ranked last among its Big Tech peers in India.
On compensation, employees often benchmark against Flipkart, Infosys, and TCS rather than Meta and Apple, reflecting a more local market reference point. That makes the pay feel exceptional even when absolute numbers are lower than North America equivalents.
India compensation satisfaction rose from 3.20 in 2020 to 3.64 by 2024, but the gap with Indian market competitors is closing. Compensation and career growth remain the only dimensions holding the trade-off together, and even that advantage is narrowing.
Amazon India ranks last among Amazon, Google India, and Microsoft India on work-life balance, management, culture, and overall satisfaction. The gap is consistent across nearly every major workplace dimension.
